Scenario 1: Maria (She/hers)
Maria is from Spain and arrived in Vancouver about 12 years ago. She was sponsored by her husband Juan, and they have a 6-year-old son, Marc.
At your first appointment with Maria, your legal assistant tells you that when Maria booked the appointment, she said that she wanted a divorce from Juan but did not identify any other legal issues that she wanted help with. She also said she did not want to provide any contact information.
In your first interview, Maria seemed nervous. She checked her watch frequently and appeared to be in a hurry to finish the appointment. When you discussed parenting arrangements for 6-year-old Marc, Maria said that she has always been Marc’s primary caregiver, and he should continue to live with her. However, when you tried to talk to her about spousal support and property division, she told you she has no interest in pursuing these issues. She could not tell you anything about the family finances. When you asked Maria about family violence, she said, “I don’t want to talk about the past. I just want to find a way to get the divorce and move on.”
